Meet the team

David Faulkner

Director and Consultant

David Faulkner is one of the most popular personalities within the Property Management industry throughout New Zealand and his passion for the industry shines through. He is an industry leader working with REINZ and the NZ Realtors group. With over a decade of experience within the industry, David has done it all, from hands-on Property Management to leading a team of over 40 Property Managers. David has also overseen a number of rent roll acquisitions and is an expert in this field.

David is a widely recognized speaker and trainer. As a qualified assessor, he has played an integral part in the development of both the NZRPM Level 3 and 4 qualifications. David is also an award-winning Toastmaster and made it to the National Final of the 2012 Humorous Speech contest.

Away from the industry, David dedicates his time not only to his family but also the local community where he has coached numerous children’s sports teams and is a qualified rugby referee.

Rachel Shepherd

General Manager/Partner of HR Recruitment

After Rachel gained her degree in Human Resource Management at Massey University, she completed a contract role with the New Zealand Police in Position Management and Job Evaluation. This experience piloted five successful years in the Recruitment industry.

Combined with 12 years in the hospitality profession and now seven years as an HR Consultant, Rachel has gained valuable experience in employee/employer relations and provides HR expertise to our clients.

Her HR areas of expertise are in: Recruitment and Selection, Job Analysis and writing Job Descriptions, Reviews and Appraisals, Work Profile Testing, Outplacement Program, CV’s and Interview Coaching, Policies and Procedures, and Organisational Structures and Charts.

Avelyn Holcroft-Lewer

Operations Manager

Avelyn’s role with Real iQ includes personal assistance to director David Faulkner, running the day to day operations, overseeing the NZ Residential Property Management Level 4 qualification and managing special projects.

Avelyn’s background includes six years specialising in educating and supporting the New Zealand Real Estate Industry to build active and engaging online profiles. She has presented for a number of private real estate companies, held public seminars and webinars, and has been engaged by the REINZ to provide training to its members. In 2015 her small business was named a finalist in The David Awards – Heroes in Small Business.

Avelyn has also written a number of articles for the REINZ magazine and Inman.com (the industry’s leading source of real estate information for the United States) among others. Other roles Avelyn has held include Ministerial Secretary to Rt. Hon Helen Clark and Hon. Phil Goff, as well as numerous Team Leader and support positions.

Mike McGarry

Rent Roll Broker

After a long career in general management roles in one of New Zealand’s most successful companies, including many years developing their international markets, Mike decided it was time to move to the paradise of Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads where he and his wife Ann had enjoyed many long summer holidays. They had been growing olives at Te Arai Point in their down time from the world of commerce and after years of hard work built a new house there. The decision was then made to move in permanently.

The next decision was taken (because Mike’s a workaholic) to provide friendly, local, knowledgeable service for Real Estate buyers and sellers of coastal land close to home. A new office was opened and Mike built a team of successful agents and a very good property management business. The commitment to quality, on time service with high levels of integrity and ethics paid dividends and the business grew year on year.

Opportunities arose and Mike sold the Real Estate business to reduce the seven day a week commitment in supporting customers and agents.

Mike has joined the Real iQ team to help customers value, buy and sell rent rolls with the benefit of knowing he has strong and full understanding of achieving success having had ‘skin in the game’ for a long time. Mike’s easy nature and knowledge is here to help with the needs and the complications business owners face on a daily basis in their sale or purchase decisions.

Leatrice Thomas

Operations & Qualification Coordinator

Leatrice is the glue of Real iQ! Leatrice assists the Operations Manager and administrates the Residential Property Management Level 4 Qualification for all trainees. On a daily basis Leatrice collaborates reports and coordinates our trainees to provide support. “She enjoys giving them a nudge when they start to fall behind to avoid Parkinson’s law”. Leatrice has an administrative background from educational learning institutes to industry training organisations. Leatrice has come to learn that the Property Management Industry is very demanding and comprehensive but also understands the need to assist individuals and Property Managers on their learning journey. A mad keen golfer in her spare time, you will find Leatrice on golf courses up and down the country and has allegedly even achieved the odd hole in one!

Gina Thornton

Trainer

Gina is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable Property Management personalities and has had a stellar career to date. Gina’s full time position is working at one of New Zealand’s most decorated Property Management companies Wendell Property Management in Auckland. Gina has won plenty of awards in her career. In 2012 she was REINZ Runner Up Rookie of the Year, 2015 Finalist for Property Manager of the Year and 2017 Finalist Business Development Manager of the Year. She has worked her way from running a portfolio, a Business Development Manager and successfully leading a team of Property Managers. She has an infectious energy and passion for the industry, a keen spirit to share her knowledge and a commitment to raising the standard of Property Management. Gina helps Real iQ by hosting workshops and is training to become a fully qualified assessor.

Julia Day

Trainer and Assessor

Julia Day was one of New Zealand’s first qualified Property Managers and became a workplace assessor at Property Brokers soon after. Julia has worked with David for nearly 10 years, helping him grow on of New Zealand’s largest privately owned rent rolls. Julia is reunited with David and looks after many of the trainees who are completing the New Zealand Residential Property Management qualification. Julia comes from a family of property investors and also has an extensive background in insurance so Property Management came naturally for Julia.
